You’re more adaptable than you think

Artificial Intelligence = real change 

“What got us here won’t get us there” has never been truer than today. While many are heralding the recent volatility in the tech share prices as the beginning of the end of the AI bubble, there is an undeniable shift in the productivity of organisations quietly implementing their products.

Is it a bubble? Surely. Will there be underlying changes that significantly transform the way we work and live? Surely. As someone who happened to be in university 20 years ago studying ICTs and industrial revolution when the dotcom bubble burst this is not my first rodeo [it also highlights my dubious career choices, but I’m ever a tech optimist].

Just as the internet and the ancillary firms and sectors went on to drive massive change in the ways we work, while also delivering us 7/10 of the world’s most valuable companies by market capitalisation,  so will AI. 

This means we have to adapt – as individuals, as organisations, if we’re going to thrive in the next 20 years.

 

How open are you to pivoting?

Adaptability is not just a soft skill, but a hard capability.

Adaptability is…

a critical quality in today’s fast-paced, ever-changing world. At its core, adaptability is the ability to adjust readily to different conditions, environments, or circumstances. It’s about being flexible, versatile, and open to change.

As individuals, when we’re adaptable we’re able to embrace change, make quick decisions, learn continuously, be resilient, shift perspectives and adjust our style and approach to fit the needs of different people and situations. We’re all more adaptable than we realise. Try this short exercise to reflect on your own adaptability.

Think back to a significant change you’ve experienced in your life. This could be a major project, a role transition, an organisational restructure, or even enforced lockdown lifestyle changes during the pandemic. Visualise the change, and then answer the following questions

  1. Describe the change situation. What was the context? What made it significant?
  2. What was your initial reaction to this change? What emotions did you experience?
  3. How did you navigate this change? What strategies or approaches did you use
  4. What challenges or obstacles did you face? How did you overcome them?
  5. What did you learn about yourself through this change experience?
  6. Looking back, what would you do differently if faced with a similar change?
  7. How has this experience influenced your approach to subsequent changes or challenges?


Adaptability is the capacity to navigate complex, dynamic situations effectively. It’s the ability to respond to new challenges, to learn from experiences, and to adjust strategies and approaches as needed. I’m willing to bet that you found you were more adaptable than you initially thought when you reflected back on your experience.

In today’s business environment, where change is constant and uncertainty is high, adaptability is more important than ever. Those of us who can adapt are better equipped to navigate disruption, to seize new opportunities, and to lead our organisations through transformative change. Whether it’s up skilling to be awesome at prompts, checking out what the future skills in your industry and area are likely to be, or learning more about the human skills that will make us indispensable, harness that adaptability to set yourself and your teams up for success.

Developing adaptability often requires stepping out of our comfort zone, taking on new challenges, and being open to learning. It involves cultivating a growth mindset, where we view challenges as opportunities to learn and develop. It may be a rollercoaster for a while, but the machines are coming, and with them they are bringing the need to change…get ahead of the curve and get flexing your adaptability muscles.
